Texture Icon Tutorial-01

Well here is my first icon tutorial using textures

so Lets begin shall we...

For this tutorial we will be using my Galaxy Icon Textures here is the link to download if you want   GALAXY ICON TEXTURES

1) First lets take your image and crop to your liking, today I will be working with sam from supernatural, I just love this picture and you have to say he is definitely a good subject to work with..

2) Next we will be placing our texture layer on top of the picture, for this tutorial we will be using the galaxy icon texture set

Set the Fill for the texture to 77%. Then take your eraser tool, and select a soft brush and rub off the face and body. Try to keep a soft edge to Sam. So it should look like this

3) Now lets do some coloring to the icon
Go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Curves (Since I love working with curves)

 RGB Output     Input
 Point 1             8864
 Point 2173 176

RED Output     Input
 Point 1             3980
 Point 2192171

GREEN Output     Input
 Point 1             6062
 Point 2202 182

 BLUE             Ouput        Input
 Point 182  43
 Point 2 7954
 Point 3 191 199

4) Now lets add some texture or brushes if you like for me I added text

Optional) if you want you can sharpen up the image, so I went back to my base layer of same and sharpened it once
 Final picture

And your done...

Here are some examples of this tutorial

So enjoy making icons everyone... hope you learned something new..

I'm going to ask a REALLY stupid question. >.< How do you do Step 2? That part never works for me. :-(

This is a very good tut and I would like to use it.

Well for step 2 it requires that you use the soft brush eraser tool to rub the texture off, so that the image can be seen,
so try practising on other images, if you are having trouble, try to reduce the opacity of the eraser tool so that you can get even a more softer edge..

i hope that helps..
