Jumper Header Tutorial

Well here is my first header tutorial request by tomo_p

We will be creating this today,
Working with Photoshop CS3

1) First we need to download some great pictures, so for great pics you need to visit the original website for jumper and download the wallpapers (site: http://www.jumperthemovie.com/)
so here are some of the picture we will be using:

We will be starting with the base by using the first picture of the moon. So open up a new document with the size 640 x 480 on 72 resolution.
Drag the image and then right click on the image to flip it horizontal.
Name this layer as the background.
2) Now lets add our character to the background, take the second image and cut out David using the selection tool or magnetic lasso tool.
Now place this cut out above the background layer, you can resize or position the subject to your liking... Then take the eraser tool with a soft brush and try to soften the edges of the character a little.
You can also take the burn tool using the same brush size and darken the background, the moon and his jacket.

3) Now duplicate this layer of the main character and set the blending mode to Lighter color 100% (CS2 use lighten). Then resize and move it your liking. For me
I decided to make the image smaller and position it inside the jacket and then erase out the rest.

4) Now we take our last picture of the character standing on the Egyptian statue.
Set the blending mode to Softlight 100%. Resize and position it just below the moon as if standing on the mountain. Erase out the unwanted by using a soft brush.

5) Duplicate this layer once only. Now take the burn tool and brushed with a soft brush to darken him and then took the dodge tool
to brighten the area around him.

6) Now its time for the coloring part. Go to Layer>New Adjustment layer> Curves

RGB Output Input
 Point 161 62
 Point 2174 154

REDOutput Input
 Point 152 77
 Point 2168175

GREEN Output Input
 Point 16956
 Point 2158 211

Now you can add text, textures and brushes to your liking. I just added text only

To get this final result.

Wow...thank you so much for this awesome tutorial on making banners/headers like yours. (and thanks for sharing your beautiful work of art! *took all pix on this entry btw*

I've always wanted to learn how to do this type of graphics for my own banners on my personal blog but, never knew 'how'. And I hardly ever have the time too, much less have money these days to take college courses on Photoshop either. *sigh*

I had a friend of mine make my current banner (w/animation .gif sparklies on it) if you're interested in seeing my blog. I'm Reiko @ http://reiko-chan.blogspot.com. *bashful* Mine isn't as professional-looking as yours but, I try. I'm still a 'newbie' to Photoshop but I did learn how to make my own tags for Jpop magazine scans as well.

Your advice is greatly appreciated by me and to find free advice/suggestions/tutorials on working with Photoshop on LJ was an awesome find.

Hi :) I just wanted to say thanks for this terrific tutorial. I've been wanting to make my own journal header with this tut when I got around to changing my layout, and now I've finally finished the header except for the border. I thought you might be curious to see what someone made following your instructions, so here is mine. Thanks again for this tutorial, it was very easy to follow :)

Oh yeah, I used Paint Shop and just changed the coloring to what I liked ^_^
